Activity Technician/Mental Health Option

Bring some sunshine in. Activity Technicians work to bring stimulating, positive activity into the daily lives of nursing home, group home, or assisted living residents. You might arrange for visiting entertainment (speakers, musicians, etc.), or organize group games, crafts, or outings.

Mental Health Technicians use similar positive relational/motivational skills to help their clients engage in the treatment plans of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. You could assist your client in recovering/developing everyday living skills, and building positive relationships.

As a student in this option you can expect interactive, experience-based learning. The coursework has been carefully designed to give you opportunities to learn, develop and practice meaningful activity and care methods. You will also complete a four-week specialized internship at the end of your second semester.

Choose to graduate with a diploma after 9 months, or get an 18-month Associate of Applied Science degree—it’s up to you!

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor: “The employment of human service technicians is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, particularly for applicants with appropriate training. This is due in a large part to the aging population, and increased demand for mental health and substance abuse treatment.”
